Nicholas Hooper has this to say about In Noctem: "But there is one notable exception (to the order of the tracks on the HBP soundtrack): track 2 "In Noctem" appears over the end title roller but it provided the musical DNA for Dumbledore’s story throughout the movie. The piece was written early during the production period so that the Hogwarts school choir could be filmed singing it, but due to the inevitable changes that take place during the making of such a large-scale film the sequence was omitted. The music, however, remained a significant influence throughout the entire film. If you listen to the middle chanting section you will find that it appears in nearly all the significant Dumbledore sequences and it is developed into some of the most dramatic cues such as “ Journey to the Cave”. Also from this source is the cello solo in “Dumbledore’s Farewell” which is based on the opening bars of "In Noctem"." The song is composed by Nicholas Hooper, and the lyrics are written by Steve Kloves, the writer of all of the Harry Potter films excepting only the fifth.
