and how fabulous you really looked. You are not as fat as you imagine. Don't worry about the future.
Or worry, but know that worrying is as effective
as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubble gum.
The real troubles in your life
are apt to be things that never crossed your worried mind,
the kind that blindside you at 4 pm on some idle Tuesday. Do one thing every day that scares you. Sing. Don't be reckless with other people's hearts;
don't put up with people who are reckless with yours. Floss. Don't waste your time on jealousy:
sometimes you're ahead, sometimes you're behind.
The race is long and, in the end, it's only with yourself. Remember compliments you receive.
Forget the insults:
if you succeed in doing this, tell me how. Keep your old love letters,
throw away your old bank statements Stretch. Don't feel guilty if you don't know
what you want to do with your life.
The most interesting people I know
didn't know at 22 what they wanted to do with their lives.
Some of the most interesting 40-year-olds I know still don't. Get plenty of calcium.
Be kind to your knees:
you'll miss them when they're gone. Maybe you'll marry, maybe you won't;
maybe you'll have children, maybe you won't;
maybe you'll divorce at 40;
maybe you'll dance the funky chicken on your 75th wedding anniversary.
Whatever you do, don't congratulate yourself too much,
or berate yourself either. Your choices are half chance;
so are everybody else's. Enjoy your body:
use it every way you can.
Don't be afraid of it or of what other people think of it:

prices will rise,
politicians will philander.
You, too, will get old.
And when you do, you'll fantasize that when you were young,
prices were reasonable, politicians were noble,
and children respected their elders. Respect your elders. Don't expect anyone else to support you.
Maybe you have a trust fund,
maybe you'll have a wealthy spouse,
but you never know when either one might run out. Don't mess too much with your hair
or by the time you're 40 it will look 85. Be careful whose advice you buy,
but be patient with those who supply it. Advice is a form of nostalgia;
dispensing it is a way
of fishing the past from the disposal,
wiping it off,
painting over the ugly parts
and recycling it for more than it's worth.

Užívej si sílu a krásu svého mládí; nevadí; neporozumíš síle a kráse svého mládí dokud nezeslábne. Ale věř mi, za 20 let si budeš prohlížet své fotky a navracet se na cestu, kterou teď už nemůžeš vydýchat, kolik možností leželo před tebou a jak skvěle jsi opravdu vypadal... Nejsi tak tlustý jako tvá představa. Neměj obavy z budoucnosti; nebo mějte, ale vězte, že obávání se je asi tak účinné, jako řešit rovnici algebry žvýkáním žvýkačky. Skutečné problémy v tvém životě jsou velmi pravděpodobně věci, které nikdy neskříží tvojí ustaranou hlavu.- ne ty , které tě zaslepí v 4 odpoledne některé hloupé úterý. Dělej každej den jednu věc, kt tě děsí. Zpívej. Nebuď bezohledný k ostatním lidem, neztrácej čas s lidmi, kteří neberou ohledy na tebe. Neztrácej svůj čas žárlivostí. Občas jsi vpředu, občas jsi vzadu..závod je dlouhý, a na konci jsi jen ty sám se sebou. Vzpomeň si na komplimenty, které jsi "dostal", zapomeň nadávky. Pokud v tomhle uspěješ, řekni mi jak. Nevyhazuj dopisy starých lásek, vyhazuj staré bankovní výpisy. Protahuj se. Nepociťuj provinilost, pokud nevíš jak naložit se svým životem... nejzajímavější lidé, které znám, nevěděli v 22 letech co ve svém životě chtějí, mnoho zajímavých 40'tníků, které znám, to stále neví. ber hodně vápníku. buď laskavý ke svým kolenům, budeš je postrádat až odejdou. možná se oženíš, možná nechceš, možná budeš mít děti, možná nechceš, možná se rozvedeš ve 40, možná si zatančíš se směšným kuřetem na tvém 75. výročí svatby...cokoliv děláš, moc si negratuluj, ani si nespílej příliš brzy - tvé rozhodnutí je polovina tvé šance, stejně jako každého dalšího. Užívej si své tělo. používej ho kdekoliv můžeš. neměj obavy z toho, nebo z toho co si jiní lidé myslí, je to ten nejskvělejší nástroj jaký jsi kdy vlastnil. Tancuj... vždy když nemáš co na práci, ale jen ve svém vlastním obýváku. Čti pokyny, ikdyž je nebudeš nenásledovat. Nečti krásné časopisy, vždy dávají ti jen pocit ošklivosti. Bež poznat své rodiče, nikdy nevíš, kdy odejdou k bohu. chovej se pěkně ke svým sourozencům; jsou nejlepším odkazem k tvé minulosti a lidé, kteří nejpravděpodobněji s tebou budou držet v budoucnu. Pochop, že přátelé přichází a odchází, ale vzácnou část z nich bys měl zdržet. Pracuj tvrdě na tom, abys překlenul propast v geografii a životním stylu, protože čím budeš starší, tím víc budeš potřebovat lidi, které jsi poznal, když jsi byl mladý. Žij jednou v New Yorku, ale odjeď dřív než tě udělá tvrdým. Žij jednou v severní Kalifornii, ale opusť ji dřív, než tě udělá měkkým. Cestuj.
Příjmej jistě nezcizitelné pravdy, ceny porostou, politici budou flirtovat, ty také zestárneš a budeš vzpomínat na to, že když jsi byl mladý ceny byly rozumné, politici byli ušlechtilí, a děti respektovaly starší. Respektuj starší. Neočekávej, že tě někdo bude podporovat. Možná máš svěřenecký fond, možná máš bohatou manželku. Nikdy nevíš, kdy jedno z toho skončí. Netrap moc své vlasy, nebo až ti bude 40, budou vypadat na 85. Buď opatrný na to, čí rady kupuješ, ale, buď trpělivý s těmi, kdo je poskytují. Rada je formou nostalglie, předání části naší minulosti.
