Биография All Sports Band
A can't miss concept? How about five musicians playing rock wearing sports uniforms, sort of an all sports version of the Village People. When sound engineer Tracy Coats came up with this concept, he scoured the country looking for musicians to put this all together. He took out ads in Rolling Stone, Billboard, and Variety magazines, & received more than 2000 responses. After recruiting keyboardist Chuck Kentis (the race car driver) and bassist Alphonso Carey (the football player), Coats went to Cleveland and signed guitarist Cy Sulack (the baseball player), drummer Jimmy Clark (the boxer), and singer Michael John Toste (the karate fighter, who was originally going to dress as a hockey player). Clark, whom Coats had seen playing drums in a sweaty local club, seemed like the perfect fit since he wore shorts. But Toste didn't know karate, so he had to take lessons before the band performed. Coats secured a record deal with Radio Records (at that time distributed by Atlantic Records) and in 1981 the band released their self-titled, and only, album. That album spawned two charted singles; "I'm Your Superman" (released in 1981 - peaked at #94), and "Opposites Do Attract" (released in 1982 - peaked at #78). They released another single, "Young Girl", which didn't chart. To support the album, the band made appearances on "American Bandstand" and "Solid Gold", but due to poor sales & low airplay, they disbanded. Toste went on to become an ordained minister. The remaining 4 members went on to become studio & touring musicians.
